What do you know about your audience?

Who is/are the audiences for social realism?
Through internet research I have found that the audiences of these films are very niche as there are few films that fall in just the one category. Its often that most films fall into more categories than one.
Who distributes social realism films?
There are very few distributers of social realism films as it is such a niche genre with a smaller audience. It is hard to find information on these films unless you know where to look. The makers of these films tend to advertise in magazines. It is easy to tell a social realism poster from a normal feature film as there are certain aspects of them that really standout for example, they are most of the time:
·         Simple
·         Real/truthful
·         Not over the top
·         Dark, grim and gritty
·         Featuring lower class issues
·         Raw, rough and bleak.
There are few channels that these films are shown on but yet some quite big companies.
Film4 are a very large company that show interests in these films and have help support film makers in the past by providing funding. There are a few online channels where these films can be found such as MUBI, LoveFilm, and Vimeo. Even though we see these films featured on these websites, they all have their own ways of finding them and storing them, to even what type they show. For example MUBI is a large online movie database that allows users to watch films online. As it is a database it has a wide range of films available in lots of different genres making the website easy to navigate, whereas Vimeo is a smaller website that mainly features homemade videos and films much like YouTube but they attract certainly have their own demographic audience. There are also Film festivals that feature Social Realism films such as the world famous Cannes Film Festival.
These films audiences are often shared online on blogs; these are free and easy to set up, customisable, and free to view. Vimeo, mentioned above, is like a blog a it allows users to post articles, videos, podcasts etc and viewers can comment, share knowledge and give help over these videos. This is the most popular way as it is very easy to access.
